Every sunrise but the Sabbath
the faithful, stationed along the route,
anticipate my prophesied arrival...
the coming of the promised one
and house by house, by ones and twos,
the pre-leash-law pinscher and pointer,
the beagle, boxer, and bassett
and Judas the Jack Russell ‘Doubting’ Terrier
wagging their windshield-wiper tails
watering their telephone poles
righteously sniffing butts and helping
lawns to be fruitful and multiply
join me in casting aside their nets...
casting their lots instead with me,
their suburban Jesus du Jour, swaddled
missionaries of the word,
my dozen disciples, delivering
the good Bangor Daily News and
barking their happy Hosannahs...
